Amazon’s Alexa is Getting Clobbered

An anonymous reader writes: In the first quarter of 2016, Amazon Echo held 80% of the global smart assistant market, according to marketing research firm Canalys. Chinese companies were so far behind that they registered zero. But just a year later, Amazon has collapsed to a 28% market share, behind Google Home’s 36% and ahead of China’s Alibaba and Xiaomi with a combined 19%. Amazon had a strong head start with its Echo lineup, which launched in 2014. But now it’s losing ground both in the U.S. and China, the leading markets for the devices.

Browser maker Opera has filed to go public

Norway-based company Opera Ltd. has filed for an initial public offering in the U.S. According to its F-1 document, the company plans to raise up to $115 million.
In 2017, Opera generated $128.9 million in operating revenue, which led to a net income of $6.1 million.
While many people are already familiar with the web browser Opera, the company itself has had a tumultuous history. Opera shareholders separated the company into two different entities — the browser maker and the adtech operations.
The advertising company is now called Otello. And a consortium of Chinese companies acquired the web browser, the consumer products and the Opera brand. That second part is the one that is going public in the U.S.
Opera currently manages a web browser for desktop computers and a handful of web browsers for mobile phones. On Android, you can download Opera, Opera Mini and Opera Touch. On iOS, you’ll only find Opera Mini.

The advantages of an email-driven Git workflow

git 2.18.0 has been released, and with it my first contribution to
git has shipped! My patch was for a git feature which remains disappointingly
obscure: git send-email. I want to
introduce my readers to this feature and speak to the benefits of using an
email-driven git workflow – the workflow git was originally designed for.

Email isn’t as sexy as GitHub (and its imitators), but it has several
advantages over the latter. Email is standardized, federated, well-understood,
and venerable. A very large body of email-related software exists and is equally
reliable and well-understood. You can interact with email using only open source
software and customize your workflow at every level of the stack – filtering,
organizing, forwarding, replying, and so on; in any manner you choose.

Git has several built-in tools for leveraging email. The first one of note is
format-patch. This can take a git
commit (or series of commits) and format them as plaintext emails with embedded
diffs. Here’s a small
