Building a Distributed Log from Scratch: Sketching a New System

In part four of this series we looked at some key trade-offs involved with a distributed log implementation and discussed a few lessons learned while building NATS Streaming. In this fifth and final installment, we’ll conclude by outlining the design for a new log-based system that draws from the previous entries in the series.
The Context
For context, NATS and NATS Streaming are two different things. NATS Streaming is a log-based streaming system built on top of NATS, and NATS is a lightweight pub/sub messaging system. NATS was originally built (and then open sourced) as the control plane for Cloud Foundry. NATS Streaming was built in response to the community’s ask for higher-level guarantees—durability, at-least-once delivery, and so forth—beyond what NATS provided. It was built as a separate layer on top of NATS. I tend to describe NATS as a dial tone—ubiquitous and always on—perfect for “online” communications. NATS Streaming is the voicemail—leave a

Atrium is hiring ML / NLP experts to `[[-1, 0], [0, -1]]` the legal industry

Atrium is on a mission to turn the legal industry around 180 degrees and bring it kicking and screaming into the 21st century.By bringing technologists under the same roof as lawyers and paralegals, we are building a powerful corpus of labeled legal data which we truly believe will be globally unique. Facebook open-sources Detectron

Today, Facebook AI Research (FAIR) open sourced Detectron — our state-of-the-art platform for object detection research.
The Detectron project was started in July 2016 with the goal of creating a fast and flexible object detection system built on Caffe2, which was then in early alpha development. Over the last year and a half, the codebase has matured and supported a large number of our projects, including Mask R-CNN and Focal Loss for Dense Object Detection, which won the Marr Prize and Best Student Paper awards, respectively, at ICCV 2017. These algorithms, powered by Detectron, provide intuitive models for important computer vision tasks, such as instance segmentation, and have played a key role in the unprecedented advancement of visual perception systems that our community has achieved in recent years.
Beyond research, a number of Facebook teams use this platform to train custom models for a variety of applications including augmented reality and community

GitLab 10.4 released

Reordering Issues in Epics Epics allow you to manage a list of associated issues that together share a theme. Often an epic represents a large feature that has been separated into multiple issues to be worked on across multiple milestones. Depending on an organization’s workflow, they may want the list order in epics to reflect different scenarios. This could be priority, difficulty, feasibility, or order of implementation. Some organizations might want to put closed issues near the top, while others might want them near the bottom. With this release, users can now reorder the issues in an epic by simply dragging and dropping, similar to that in Issue Boards. Read through the documentation on Epics Epics API With this release, the GitLab API supports Epics. So you can now manage individual epics, lists of epics, and all epic attributes (title, description, and dates) through the API, allowing your team to
