Amazon Lightsail vs. DigitalOcean

On November 30th, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a new service called “Lightsail” which promises to deliver easy Virtual Private Servers (VPS) at predictable costs.
AWS has been the leader in on-demand computing resources for a decade. They pioneered the space, and have by far the largest footprint when it comes to both customers, available regions, and revenue, which is on track to reach $13 Billion this year, according to a report by Business Insider. In the last 5 years however, DigitalOcean has had incredible success by selling to a different market, the individual developer. Making it easier to go from idea to deployment at a low cost, without navigating the confusing AWS control panel, while at the same time having access to an extremely active community. This move by Amazon appears to be a direct attack on DigitalOcean and the success they have had making cloud servers easier for hobbyists, developers,

Setting up an HA Kubernetes cluster with private networking in AWS

In this tutorial we will cover setting up a HA privately networked Kubernetes cluster in AWS with Kubernetes kops.
Fully private VPC, housing utility and private subnets, with hybrid cloud capabilities over VPN
HA (Highly Available) masters spread across availability zones with private subnetting
Nodes spread across availability zones with private subnetting
Routing between subnets with NAT gateways
Elastic Load Balancers in front of the resources for public access
Bastion server for backend SSH access to the instances

Kubernetes kops is an open source tool that Kubernetes offers that can be used for deploying Kubernetes clusters against different cloud providers. We will be using the tool to help us with the heavy lifting in this tutorial.
Start by installing the most recent version of kops from the master branch.

brew update && brew install –HEAD kops

More information on installing kops can be found here for our non OS X users.

We will also be needing a tool called kubectl. Think of this

Announcing TypeScript 2.1

We spread ourselves thin, but this is the moment you’ve been awaiting – TypeScript 2.1 is here!
For those who are unfamiliar, TypeScript is a language that brings you all the new features of JavaScript, along with optional static types. This gives you an editing experience that can’t be beat, along with stronger checks against typos and bugs in your code.
This release comes with features that we think will drastically reduce the friction of starting new projects, make the type-checker much more powerful, and give you the tools to write much more expressive code.
To start using TypeScript you can use NuGet, or install it through npm:

npm install -g typescript

You can also grab the TypeScript 2.1 installer for Visual Studio 2015 after getting Update 3.
Visual Studio Code will usually just prompt you if your TypeScript install is more up-to-date, but you can also follow instructions to use TypeScript 2.1 now with Visual
