Ubuntu 16.04 Available in Latest Insider Update To Windows 10

The latest Windows 10 Insider preview — build 14936 — features Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. When a user enables the ‘Bash on Ubuntu on Windows’ feature for the first time, OMGUbuntu reports, Windows 10 now installs an Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerus) image instead of Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty Tahr). From the report: The updated version of Ubuntu in the WSL only affects new instances, i.e., those created by running lxrun.exe /install or on the very first run of the bash.exe setup. It is possible to upgrade WSL instances from Ubuntu 14.04 to Ubuntu 16.04 manually by running the do-release-upgrade command. Other changes in the WSL in Build 14936 include support for chroot system call, epoll support for /dev/null and the ability for bash -c to redirect to a file.

Ask HN: Alternatives to AWS?

Ask HN: Alternatives to AWS?
114 points by bachback 15 hours ago | hide | past | web | 126 comments | favorite AWS has captured an enormous market. As a user I’m surprised there are only few serious contenders (cloud provider with an API and global footprint). Digitalocean has managed to captured the low end of the spectrum for people looking to run a few servers. Any serious alternatives to AWS today? Google App engine is still closely tied to there way of doing things.

U of Texas System, Salesforce team up to build out learning platform

The growing learning relationship management market got a major new player this week as the University of Texas System announced it will further develop TEx, its homegrown learning platform, in partnership with business software provider Salesforce.

TEx, short for Total Education Experience, last year launched as a pilot in a competency-based degree program at the system’s Rio Grande Valley campus. When TEx 2.0 begins in fall 2017, it will have evolved to a personalized learning platform, a marketplace of courses and programs, and an academic record built on block-chain technology.

The system’s Institute for Transformational Learning, known as UTx, is leading the development effort. The system opened the institute in 2012 to serve as its innovation arm, exploring new ways to offer education and support to its increasingly diverse student body.

“These kinds of transformational moments are not going to come from the [billions] of ed-tech funding that’s coming from venture capital,” said

Linux 4.8 released

From: Linus Torvalds
Date: Sun Oct 02 2016 – 19:49:37 EST

So the last week was really quiet, which maybe means that I couldprobably just have skipped rc8 after all. Oh well, no real harm done. This obviously means that the merge window for 4.9 is open, and Iappreciate the people who already sent in some pull requests early dueto upcoming travel or other reasons. I’ll start pulling thingstomorrow, and have even the most eager developers and testershopefully test the final 4.8 release before the next developmentkernels start coming ;)Anyway, there’s a few stragging fixes since rc8 listed below: it’s amixture of arch fixes (arm, mips, sparc, x86), drivers (networking, nvdimm, gpu) and generic code (some core networking, with a fewfilesystem, cgroup and and vm things). All of it pretty small, and there really aren’t that many of them. Linux Kernel 4.8 released with Microsoft Surface 3 touchscreen support

Over the weekend, Linux Kernel 4.8 was unleashed on the world. This version of the kernel has been available in no fewer than eight release candidate builds, but now there’s a stable build for everyone to play with. If you’ve been following through the release candidates, there are not a huge number of changes with the stable release — mainly driver, architecture and a few bits of generic code. But for anyone who skipped these releases, there’s more to look forward to including Raspberry Pi 3 SoC and Microsoft Surface 3 touchscreen support. Linus Torvalds himself seemed fairly excited to… [Continue Reading]
